About Talah Alem

Where Clinical Science Meets Lived Humanity

I’ve learned that healing is not a linear climb—it is a cyclical process that unfolds in seasons.

Throughout my 25-year trajectory in healthcare—spanning community health organizations, the VA system, acute inpatient psychiatric care, and body-based somatic modalities—I have witnessed a fundamental truth: our physiological environments deeply dictate our capacity to heal.

True mental wellness cannot be isolated to a single diagnostic label or a brief prescription visit. It requires honoring the whole human ecology—the intricate dance between neurobiology, somatic awareness, lived experience, and personal meaning.

From Bodywork to Board-Certified Care

My journey to founding Science & Soul was not born overnight; it was carved through decades of multidimensional exploration:

  • Somatic & Grounded Beginnings: My foundational path began in body-based practices—yoga and meditation, massage, and somatic integration—where I learned to listen to the nervous system through movement, touch, and breath.

  • Higher Education & Clinical Rigor: Driven to bridge intuitive care with medical authority, I pursued advanced training in psychiatric nursing, culminating in a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP).

  • Frontline Clinical Systems: Serving within community health networks, inpatient psychiatric units, and the Veterans Affairs (VA) system provided me with deep expertise in acute trauma, complex neurobiology, and systemic care.

  • Parenthood & Founding Science & Soul: Becoming a parent crystallized my understanding of capacity, cyclical seasons, and sustainable living, inspiring me to create a practice that honors both rigorous clinical medicine and deep human soul.

Unlocking Potential: A Story of Timing & Clarity

My path to higher clinical practice was also shaped by my own journey through the healthcare system. I was diagnosed with ADHD at nineteen, but didn't receive proper treatment until I was thirty.

On paper, my life was good—I was managing, adapting, and moving forward. But stepping into targeted, appropriate care at thirty transformed my relationship with my own mind. It didn't "fix" me; it removed the invisible friction that had been draining my energy. That newfound clarity gave me the sustained focus needed to finish college, navigate advanced clinical training, and realize my long-term goal of becoming a doctoral-level psychiatric provider.

Experiencing that shift firsthand deepened my clinical empathy for individuals who are high-functioning yet internally fatigued—reminding me that proper support isn't about surviving, but about thriving with ease.

The Art & Science of Self-Inquiry

My journey toward true integration began in somatic practices. Long before stepping into doctoral clinical training, I learned that regulating the nervous system from the bottom up was essential—it primed my body and mind to engage in the deeper, top-down cognitive work of psychotherapy and personal integration.

This bottom-up foundation proved vital during my own ADHD diagnosis, which marked a major turning point in understanding how my brain processes the world. Navigating neurodivergence led me to discover Tarot—not as a mystical prediction tool, but as a rich, archetypal framework for self-reflection. For a mind that often experiences thoughts in non-linear bursts, Tarot provided a visual, somatic anchor to externalize complex internal landscapes, pattern-recognize, and process my lived experience without judgment."

Rooted in Balance, Earth & Community

Outside of clinical practice, my work is sustained by the values I cultivate daily:

  • Practical Creativity: Balancing structured clinical neuroscience with art, writing, and flexible thinking.

  • Earth & Movement: Staying deeply connected through nature, seasonal living, travel, and environmental grounding.

  • Community & Belonging: Building genuine, unhurried relationships that honor local connection and shared humanity.
